Weekly Warriors: A secret weapon in the fight against hunger!

Posted on by Marz Roehrig

Earlier this year, we recognized our “Weekly Warrior” volunteers and their ongoing commitment to our fight against hunger where we live. I am still amazed with the commitment and impact these volunteers have on the daily work at Food Gatherers!

Weekly Warriors and guests gathered this summer at the Food Gatherers warehouse to celebrate their generous commitment to the fight against hunger.

Our regular volunteers have mastered many skills! Food Runners know our truck routes as well as our drivers do, they know the layout and procedures at our regular food donor sites, and they are a familiar face at our partner agencies when the food is delivered. Carrot Way volunteers wear many hats, sorting rescued bread, repackaging produce, or sorting non-perishables for family boxes and our pantry. Community Kitchen volunteers are always up for a challenge, whether it is reinvigorating an ordinary dish with new recipes or braving more exotic donated foods to make sure and utilize every ounce! No matter the task or location, our volunteers are enthusiastic and agile, making the difference every day in our mission!

As new volunteers join our ranks (and hopefully become Weekly Warriors themselves!), our experienced volunteers make a wonderful impression on the newer volunteers. They take them under their wings to help answer questions about procedures and equipment, help maintain our excellence in food safety, and most of all, help them feel welcome!
