How Your Business Can Help
- Food Gatherers was the first perishable food rescue program
in Michigan when we started in 1988. Today we connect more than
300 food donors to 150 non-profit agencies which provide much-needed
food to members of our community.

Services, Inc. (TSI) for landscaping or purchases landscape
products, TSI will make a generous donation to Food Gatherers

How can your business help?
Food businesses can help by donating food, but if you're not
a food business and still want to help, we'd love to hear from
you! Please contact info@foodgatherers.org
for more information.
Many organizations are not aware of the “Bill Emerson
Good Samaritan Food Donation Act” which has been a national
law since 1996. In an effort to encourage donations of leftover
food to food rescue and charitable food programs, H.R.2428 sets
uniform definitions and language into law, replacing state laws.
This federal law protects companies from liability
pertaining to their food donations.
- Donating is relatively easy – our staff driver and a
volunteer come into designated areas for pickup. Instead of
putting food that is still wholesome but close to expiration
into a dumpster, we pick it up and deliver it to agencies who
provide additional support for children, working families and
others in need. Food must be stored according to health department
food safety guidelines until pick-up in our refrigerated trucks.
What kind of food do we need?
- Produce – if it looks like wholesome
food to you, and you’d eat it, then its usually good for
us. We love food from local gardens, too!
- Meats – stored at or below 41 degrees
Fahrenheit, we accept fresh meat up to 3 days past “sell
by” date. We also love to receive frozen meat, so if it’s
easier for you to store it frozen, that’s the way to go!
- Dairy – We accept milk products up
to 2 days past the "sell by" date. Yogurt and cheese
items are acceptable up to 5 days past the "sell by"
date.
- Desserts – Baked goods must be wrapped,
not exposed. We accept bread on a limited basis - please contact
us for more information.
- Prepared Foods - We accept prepared foods
up to 48 hours before "sell by" date, stored at or
below 41 degrees Fahrenheit, unopened and in their original
containers. For guidelines on donating food from catered events,
please contact us.
- Deli Products – We accept deli products
(salads, sandwiches) unopened, in their original containers,as
well - up to 2 days past the "sell by" date.
